What a country – small in size, huge in highlights.  It might be famous for its Kotor Bay coastline, but that really is just the façade, hiding what lies behind the grey mountains reaching up from the bay.  On our Montenegro tour we are going to go beyond what you pictured of this country and show off the hidden gems, as well a the famous post card shots.

Montenegro has us spoilt for choice for an awesome riding itinerary – stunning climbs, breathtaking valleys and an incredible coastline are just part of what we customise our itinerary around.

From the spectacular National Parks of Durmitor, Skadar Lake and Lovcen to the beautiful Kotor Bay coastline and everything in between – we are going to make this an unforgettable adventure to this hidden gem of cycling paradise.

The Montenegro Tour 2025 includes the following locations and rides:

  • 2 nights Dubrovnik, Croatia

This tour is already known as something of a sequel to our incredibly popular Croatia Tour, so we’ve decided to follow this theme with a pick up from Dubrovnik Airport and spending the first nights in familiar territory. Over the two days we will be ticking off some extra Croatia roads and have a little sneak peak across the border at Kotor Bay, Montenegro.  The combination of riding our bikes and splashing in the Adriatic Sea will be sure to flush out any jet lag before we really start exploring.

  • 3 nights Zabljak, Montenegro, (Durmitor National Park)

We are straight into the sensory overload as we head from the coastline of Croatia into the ‘highlands’ of Montenegro.  An excursion into Bosnia and Herzegovina has us riding across the Montenegro border in the backdrop of some dramatic scenery.  That is just a taster for what is ahead of us in the Durmitor National Park.  Prepare to be blown away by the movie-set like terrain you will be riding through over the next three days – it really is that good.

  • 1 night Kolasin, Montenegro

Kolasin is a transition night between riding from the stunning Tara River valley and its famous 172m high bridge, we will enjoy some of the true hospitality of what has traditionally been a winter ski haven town.  The ride from Kolasin to our next destination is an absolute treat, just close your eyes and dream of your perfect cycling road – we’re not going to give all the secrets away though.

  • 2 nights, Montenegro

So, this location is our secret gem and we are keeping it that way.  Picture waking up to uninterrupted views from your room perched high above an emerald green valley.  The temptation is to just park up on the breakfast verandah and spend the day sipping coffee watching the sun light steadily transform the colours throughout the day.  That is, until you see the set of switchbacks leading up from the valley below.  Yes they look like fun.  Yes they are fun.

  • 2 nights Cetinje, Montenegro, (Lovćen National Park)

We’ve got a little excursion to make on our way to Cetinje – through Skadar Lake National Park.  This is such a contrast to the towering, rugged rock formations we were riding through just a few days ago.  The lake shores almost glow from floating meadows of water lillies on the glass like waters.  From Cetinje, we are on the doorstep of the Lovćen National Park.  The loop around the towering twin peaks is just wow!  Then the views open up to Kotor Bay and the Adriatic Sea beyond – are you serious, this awesome ride just got more awesomerer – yeah we were lost for words and could only manage gibberish!

  • 3 nights, Perast, Montenegro, (Kotor Bay)

If you’ve googled Montenegro, chances are you have seen pics of Kotor Bay.  Yes, it is stunning and most tourists enjoy a wander around the fortified walls of old town Kotor on their day trip from the cruise liner.  That’s not our style – now google Kotor Serpentine.  Yes, that’s more like it, 25 switchbacks snaking the way from Kotor all the way up the imposing grey rock wall to the most incredible coastal viewpoints Montenegro has to offer.  While we are here we do enjoy a bit of coastal flat land cruising as well – it’s not all climbing.  Also there is a chance to be the ‘Kotor tourist’ to see what all the fuss is about.

Montenegro has an incredible variety of terrain and scenery within a small land area.  We have come up with a ride itinerary that we feel allows most riders to enjoy this terrain from start to finish.  As always, we can use our guides and support vans to adapt the itinerary to shorten rides if the going gets tough, or find extras for those that just can’t get enough.

Highlights:

  • Dubrovnik southern coastline
  • Durmitor National Park
  • Tara River canyon
  • Skadar Lake National Park
